Br. Leo Kocheelath: A Faithful Pauline Disciple

Br. Leo Kocheelath, a true Pauline Disciple as envisioned by Blessed James Alberione, the Founder of the Pauline Family, was called to his eternal reward on Monday, 16 December 2024, at 7:00 AM in the community of Vijayawada, India.

Born as Varghese Kocheelath on 26 October 1945 in Elemgdi, Changanacherry (India), he was the fifth of ten children to Ephrem Abraham and Aley Elisabeth. He entered the Pauline community in Bombay on 21 May 1964, began his Novitiate on 16 July 1967, and made his First Religious Profession on 16 July 1969, adopting the name Leo. He perpetually consecrated himself to the Lord on 20 August 1974. Throughout his life, Br. Leo rendered generous and selfless service in various communities of the Indian Province.

Blessed Alberione once stated that the highest tribute to a Pauline is to recognize him as “observant.” By this standard, Br. Leo undoubtedly earned the highest recognition. He embraced the essentials of religious life with a genuine and profound spirit, endearing himself to all with his friendly, humble, and prayerful nature.

What truly defined his life was his unwavering dedication to the Pauline apostolate, prayer  life and  his cheerful disposition, which he upheld until his final days.

In loving memory of Br. Leo, a Requiem Mass was celebrated on 21 December 2024, at 6:30 AM in the community of Mumbai. The Mass, presided over by Fr. Joby Mathew, the Provincial, witnessed a large gathering of Paulines who came together to pray for him and give thanks to the Lord  for the life of his faithfulness to the Lord  till the end of his life.

May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his life of dedication to the Lord inspire others to follow in his footsteps with the same zeal and devotion.
