National Convention of Christian Journalists at ST PAULS Media Complex, Mumbai
The members and collaborators of the Indian Catholic Press Association (ICPA), held its 26th National Convention of Christian journalists (NCCJ) at ST PAULS Media Complex, in the campus of the Society of St Paul, Bandra Mumbai on 1 December 2021. The one-day convention was attended by more than 50 people in person and more than 1000 via online Livestream.
The theme of the convention was ‘Hit the Streets: Listen, Encounter, Engage’ based on Pope Francis’s message for the 55th World Communications Day 2021 which focuses on “Come and See (Jn 1:46): Communicating by Encountering People Where and as They Are.”
In its final statement, the participants expressed their concern over the failure of the media to be the watchdog of governance in the country. “The Fourth Pillar of democracy in the country has failed in its sacred duty of scrutinizing the government’s policies and programmes; instead it has turned out to be a pliable institution trying to live out of the ‘favours’ dished out by the government”, the statement read.
The speakers at the convention urged the Catholic communicators to hit the streets by listening, encountering and engaging with the people on the ground. Like Jesus our Master who has taught us what communication is all about, we need to take a visible and a vocal stand for truth and justice. We have to take journalism as a potent weapon in the fight against unjust systems in the society and where justice is denied to people. This should be our non-negotiable motto which alone will create the desired result.
During the event, a theme-book consisting of contributions from media experts and journalists was released.
The convention in Mumbai was planned and executed under the leadership of Fr Joby Mathew SSP, the Treasurer of the Association. He was ably assisted by Fr Johnson Chacko (General Editor), Fr Vincent Carmel (Editor, The Teenager Today), Fr Alfonso Elengikal, Fr Joe Eruppakkatt (who are all members of the Association) and other members of the community of Mumbai and the Provincilate community.
The Indian Catholic Press Association (ICPA) is an association of Catholic newspapers and periodicals, news agencies and publishing houses, journalists and teachers of journalism. The ICPA is one of the oldest and most active Catholic press organizations in Asia.
